The Significance of Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja is dedicated to Surya Dev, the Sun God, and Chhathi Maiya. Devotees express gratitude for the energy and life sustained by the Sun and nature, while observing the festival with faith, cleanliness, discipline and devotion.

The festival is celebrated with family and community, and its rituals are closely connected with rivers, ponds and other natural water bodies. Offerings are prepared carefully and presented at sunrise and sunset.

The festival observance

The Four Days of Chhath

Chhath Puja is traditionally observed over four days, with each day having its own rituals and significance.

Nahay Khay

The first day begins with ritual bathing and preparation of simple, traditionally prepared food. Devotees begin the observance with cleanliness and devotion.

Kharna

The second day is marked by fasting during the day. In the evening, devotees prepare and offer prasad before continuing the observance.

Sandhya Arghya

On the third day, devotees gather at the water's edge and offer Arghya to the setting Sun with devotion and carefully prepared offerings.

Usha Arghya

On the final morning, devotees offer Arghya to the rising Sun and complete the principal observance of the festival.
A Cherished Tradition

Thekua and Chhath Puja

Thekua has a special place in the food traditions associated with Chhath Puja. It is traditionally prepared as an offering and is closely connected with the memories, rituals and family traditions of the festival.

Made with familiar ingredients and prepared with care, Thekua represents the simplicity and devotion that are central to the festival. For many families from Bihar and Purvanchal, its taste is inseparable from memories of Chhath at home.

At Purvanchal Sanesh, our Thekua is inspired by this enduring food tradition.
